UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN FOOTBALL
ON AUDIO & VIDEO!

For many years we have been archiving U of M Football on both audio and videotape, and have found that neither the University of Michigan or radio stations that carry the games kept much, if anything, of these broadcasts... but I have!  Now, I am able to provide them to Michigan fans who wish to re-live the memories.  Games are available on CD's (audio) or DVD (video).  Prices are very reasonable so that I can cover my expenses and costs of duplication.  This service is not for profit or personal gain.  Videos are being provided for private use and not for sale or re-broadcast.

Audio copies of games are just $12.  Video copies of games are only $18. All video orders are provided on DVD and all audio is on CD, from the masters
Thanks to search engines, like Google, quite a number of Michigan fans have been in touch seeking games from past years.  Some are former players, and others alumni...while some are simply great U of M Football fans.

Over time we are transferring more and more games from tape onto DVD's.    Now, ALL games are being archived on DVD.  Michigan Replay with hi-lights of  game is also included some of the recordings.  Michigan Replay was a production of CTC Sports, and was produced for more than a quarter century by top- notch director Bob Lipson!  In 2008 it was succeeded by a new program called "Inside Michigan Football" with head coach Rich Rodriguez and hosted by Jim Brandstatter.  Visit www.mgoblue.com for time and channel.

Feel free to e-mail me artvuolo@aol.com with questions regarding your request.  Scroll down past the listing for news about how and why, after the 2005 season, WJR Radio dropped Michigan sports broadcasts in favor of the MSU Spartans.  We also have news about which stations are the NEW home of Wolverine football, basketball and hockey for the 2007 season and beyond.  Thanks and GO BLUE!

Scroll down past the game listings for information about the most recently added DVD featuring Bo Schembechler's passing in 2007, and just about ALL of the extensive TV news coverage.

+ Art’s camera only (many games in the late 70's and 80's are Art's camera only)

Most all games feature audio with the late Bob Ufer until the ‘81 Iowa game which was his last broadcast.  Bob passed away on October 26, 1981.  From that point forward through the 2005 season, nearly ALL games have WJR audio with Frank Beckmann calling the games and color analyst Jim Brandstatter!  Some games feature other partners with Beckmann like: former player Bob Thornbladh and Coach Jerry Hanlon.  You must remember that in the 70's and 80's NOT EVERY GAME was televised.  Today fans are somewhat spoiled by the amount of TV coverage U of M receives.  But, in the days prior to ESPN, ESPN-2, ESPN-Plus, and Classic ESPN etc, radio was the only medium for Michigan Football.  This why several games are via Art's single-angle camera in the late 70's and 80's. Starting in the 2006 season, radio audio features Frank and Jim with new field reporter Doug Karsch from the Michigan Sports Network and produced by IMG.  Karsch succeeded WJR's Steve Courtney.

2005, 2006 and 2007 Football Seasons

There are several "keeper" games from these seasons, in case your VCR taped the wrong channel or someone taped over your favorite game.  The Michigan State game with a win in OT in East Lansing, the thrilling last second win against Penn State on 10-15-05 and an amazing OT win on the road at Iowa are all true blue collectable games.  The 2006 Notre Dame in South Bend was huge, with lots of local color added.  The CMU game was the first ever stopped by a thunderstorm in The Big House!  All games are on DVD with Beckmann & Brandstatter.  Most games in 2006 and 2007 feature Michigan Replay after the game from CTC Sports.  The 2007 season had a bad start and finish, but all the other games were worthy of another look.  The Appalachian State loss even includes Jay Leno's Tonight Show comment about Coach Lloyd Carr!  The 2008 Season is one we shall overlook during the year that both the Big House and the team were being rebuilt.

2009 Football Season

After the disappointing 2008 season, and as the stadium was being upgraded, the team was also undergoing a major makeover...but the results were not to be realized until the 2009 season.  With three talented quarterbacks, the surprising season is providing for a lot of dramatic games. In 2009 all games feature video from television and audio from radio!  This combination makes for a very exciting presentation.  The games are all meticulously edited on a MacBook Pro with Final Cut software.  Every DVD is produced like a real "Keeper" for Michigan fans. The videos also feature extra-heavy amounts of "local color" by Art from both before and after the game itself!

Memories of Bo Schembechler from Television News
This very special 120 minute DVD contains extensive TV coverage of the passing of our beloved Bo from Detroit TV stations: WJBK Fox 2, WDIV Local 4 and WXYZ Ch. 7 plus FSN-Detroit, ESPN and ABC Television.  Among those featured with reflections about Bo are: Don Shane, Bernie Smilovitz, Dan Miller, Steve Garagiola, Fred McLeod, Steve Courtney, Devin Scillian, Carmen Harlan, Dave LewAllen, Ray Sayah, Stephen Clark, Ron Kramer, Jim Brandstatter, Earl Bruce, Frank Beckmann, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Jamie Morris, Stan Edwards, Jon Falk, Bonnie Bernstein, Chris Fowler, Mitch Albom, Wendi Nix, Brent Musburger, Doug Karsch, Rick Leach, Don Nehlen, Billy Taylor, Ara Parseghian, Lou Holtz and Lloyd Carr.  The DVD ends with an FSN "Tribute To Bo" hosted by Mickey York and closing comments from WJR personality and UM football announcer Frank Beckmann.  Special thanks to U-M fan Bill Adlhoch for recording it all.

The Battle in Seattle

In 1989, I had the pleasure of producing a special tribute to the NCAA Basketball Champions as Michigan beat Seton Hall.  Proceeds went to the U of M Athletic Scholarship Fund. Ask about the availability of that sensational video.  That project was completely financed by Ann Arbor businessman Jeff Dorn, and produced at Whirlwind Studios in Dearborn by Brian C. Dombrowski.  Video is from CBS Television, audio from WJR Radio with play-by-play from Larry Henry!  Running time: 30 minutes.  It is an incredible memory of Michigan's finest basketball season ever!  $15.00

SPECIAL MOMENTS IN MICHIGAN FOOTBALL
from the personal archives of Art Vuolo, Jr.

For any true Michigan Football fan, we've put together a special 2 hour DVD which contains many memorable moments, including: Memories of Bob Ufer: The 1981 Season.  It's a moving look back at the ultimate "homer."  Hi-Lites of the stunning 1993 victory over Ohio State in The Big House!  The cliff-hanger ending to Lloyd Carr's first game in the late August 1995 win over Virginia in the Pigskin Classic.  The actual video which helped convince the university to keep the games on The Great Voice of The Great Lakes...WJR-AM 760, hosted by 1975 UM Grad and WJR morning host  Paul W. Smith produced in December of 1996. The infamous one extra second UM-MSU game on November 3rd 2001.  You see the same ending with 3 different audio tracks; WJR's Frank and Jim, WXYT's George Blaha and lastly ABC-TV's Brent Musberger and Gary Danielson!  The thrilling ending to the U-M vs. Washington Huskies game in 2002, and the first ever overtime win in the Big House against Penn State.  This video even includes the only time that Frank Beckmann ever "broke up" on the air and Jim Brandstatter had to take over at the 1984 Northwestern game in Ann Arbor.  It was after the tackle involving two players by the name of Rogers and Hammerstein!  Outrageously funny!

DVD only $18

Why WJR repainted the BLUE room with GREEN paint!

A true story by Art Vuolo, Jr.

A stunning turn of events the University of Michigan had to find a new radio home for their football and basketball games after the 2005 season when 50,000 watt WJR-AM (760) abruptly announced on Thursday, October 13, 2005, that they would no longer be carrying any U of M sporting events.

Even more shocking was the news that The Great Voice of The Great Lakes had signed a new five-year deal to carry the Michigan State Spartans!   The reason it all  took place was MONEY.  The answer to almost every "business decision" is money.  There was simply more "GREEN" coming out of East Lansing than Ann Arbor!

Insiders knew that basketball was the driving force behind this move.  The MSU basketball program is, generally speaking, stronger and there are more than twice as many basketball games as football.  More games, equals more spots (commercials) and that equals more money.  Simple economics.

The news thrilled the Green and White MSU fans and caused great distress to thousands of maize and blue Michigan fans at the same time.  The deal was put together by, WJR’s president and general manager, Michael D. Fezzey.  Sources say that Michigan State had been lusting after the mega-power WJR for several years.  The Spartans had been aggressively perusing WJR since the spring of 2005.  It was also thought that the station was not getting as much “love and respect” from the Wolverines as they felt they deserved.  Many felt that was a sure- fire recipe for defection.  Some insiders felt the Wolverines had become somewhat complacent regarding the U of M's relationship with WJR.  Others felt the culprit was the network coordinator Host Communications, but that could not be confirmed, nor is it considered feasible.  Host has since been incorporated into sports marketing conglomerate IMG.

The Michigan Athletic Department was completely blind-sided by the move.  Athletic Director Bill Martin actually heard the news first on the radio...WJR radio!  It was incredible news since he was dealing with the station and it's network arm, Host Communications, in what was termed "good faith," or so it seemed.

The trio of broadcasters who cover the U of M Football games;  Frank Beckmann, Jim Brandstatter and Steve Courtney, were also stunned by the news.   The staff of WJR was taken by bus to East Lansing unsure of what was going to happen.   En route the bus was pulled over at a rest area near Fowlerville, by a State Trooper.  This action was pre-arranged so that Beckmann, Courtney and Paul W. Smith could be pulled off the bus and receive the news separately since it was thought the news would affect them the most.  It did.  Smith is a 1975 U of M graduate and a huge Michigan fan.

They were all taken to the Spartan Stadium where the MSU band was on the field playing the fight song and the WJR logo was already up on the electronic scoreboard. They were treated to a warm reception at the MSU facility and then were taken to an elegant dinner at the home of Michigan State President Simon.  It appears that the Spartans wanted to express their appreciation for this new association in a first class manner.

Fans no doubt compared this to when the Tigers and the Red Wings  moved from powerful WJR to the far lesser signal of sports WXYT-AM (1270).  The teams lost all of their fans in Indiana, Ohio and Ontario.  WJR will no doubt be perceived as a “turn-coat” by many U of M fans.  They have been broadcasting Michigan football and basketball since 1976 when the late Bob Ufer segued over from Ann Arbor’s WPAG, now WTKA-AM (1050).  Michigan fans can be pleased that an extensive network of stations have kept the Wolverines within ear-shot of most fans.

In May 2006, the University of Michigan reached a final decision regarding the much anticipated radio home of their sports teams.

Back on October 13, 2005, I was flattered to be asked to help find a suitable replacement for news-talk WJR-AM (760).  Because no station is bigger than ‘JR,  this reporter recommended that the games be placed on an FM signal which is as strong after sundown as it is in the daytime.  That cannot be said about any AM stations in southeast Michigan.  Even though personnel at the U-M Athletic Department are brilliant at knowing how to market their teams, they were unaware of the technicalities of radio, and AM radio in particular regarding night-time power reductions and limited coverage areas due to what are known as "pattern changes" after dark.

Now fans can hear the Wolverines on WOMC-FM (104.3) home of Detroit's best known, hall-of-fame radio personality, Dick Purtan and a healthy power output of just under 200,000 watts!  Additionally, the games are carried on Canadian powerhouse CKLW-AM (800) that, with 50,000 watts, reaches from Fort Wayne, IN to the far side of Cleveland, OH.  No other Detroit area AM covers that area keeping Michigan fans to the south pleased.  For some reason (other than in Toledo) it's hard to find stations in Ohio that want o carry the Maize & Blue.

There was a long delay in getting the deal done with WOMC due to negotiations with WJR management over the university’s desire to have Frank Beckmann call the games while remaining a key mid-morning talk host on 760 AM.  Jim Brandstatter, who is a free-lance talent and had no contractual conflicts, remains with Frank. They have a magical chemistry and most fans love ‘em.  Steve Courtney, who is WJR’s morning sports reporter on the Paul W. Smith show was dropped from the broadcasts.  CBS Radio, which owns WOMC, wanted one of their own people as a part of the radio team. So, the current field reporter is WXYT’s mid-day sports co-anchor Doug Karsch, who actually lives in Ann Arbor, in the shadow of the Michigan Stadium, and is well- connected with the Michigan Athletic Department.  U-M tailgate shows are still  featured at all home games at WOMC hosted by long-time Ann Arbor radio stars Lucy Ann Lance and Dean Erskin, with Karsch.  A pre-tailgate show was added in 2009 with longtime WOMC fixtures Tom Ryan and Mindy Markowitz.

Basketball is carried on all-news WWJ-AM (950) and according to U of M  Associate Athletic Director Bruce Madej, games are also available on urban-talk & gospel WCHB-AM (1200).  U-M hockey will be on sports WXYT-AM (1270) when not conflicting with the Red Wings. U of M Hockey  remains on Ann Arbor's WTKA-AM (1050) as will Michigan Football and Basketball.  WTKA has a very long-standing relationship with  Michigan , as it's "unofficial" sports station.

Michigan games can also be heard border to border and coast-to-coast because U of M currently has a contract with Sirius XM Satellite Radio.  Another huge plus is the ability to hear Michigan Football games on-line over the Internet!.

Stay tuned.  Each year will be another interesting and exciting season of college sports from the University of Michigan and its network of stations.
