These bricks come from the building that housed KDKA Radio, when it went "On the Air" Nov.2nd, 1920. It was the FIRST commercial radio station, which means that ALL broadcasting, both radio and TV and even the Satellite folks, trace their common heritage to this historic structure.

Building "K" was in the Westinghouse East Pittsburgh Works, and was demolished in 2007. Contractors figured the job for three months: In reality, it took close to NINE months to finish the project. The demolition company said "They sure don't build 'em like that anymore!"

These are the LAST bricks remaining..the others now being used for patios and home construction, with no one realizing their historic significance.

KDKA started by covering the 1920 elections, where Warren Harding beat Governor James Cox of Ohio. Governor Cox thought so much about the radio coverage, that he acquired WHIO, WSB and WIOD! Cox Radio now owns 80 stations in 18 markets.

The KDKA studios, a wooden structure (more like a shed), sat on the roof of Building K, nearest the south end, or to the right as you would have faced it from Braddock Ave., which borders the front of the complex. The studio for local broadcasts was, in fact, a tent!

The enclosed certificate is signed by three legendary employees: Wendy King, the FIRST female talk show hostess, who worked with her husband Ed, on 'Party Line' from 1951 to 1971. Mel Check was a staff engineer and then acting Chief Engineer from 1964 to 1998. He was considered 'The Wizard' for keeping everything running and on the air! Fred Honzberger, "The Honzman" is on the air every afternoon, and has been in the newsroom or the air studio at the station every day for 30 years! They represent a total of 88 years at the station, which is how old it will be this fall!

The bricks measure 8 inches long, by 3 1/2" wide, by 2 1/2" tall. They are mostly red, with some pink, dark orange and some white, left over from the concrete that was chipped away. The building dates from 1894, meaning that the bricks are now a ripe 114 years old!

The bricks will be shipped USPS Priority mail, so figure 2-day delivery. Trust me, it's LESS EXPENSIVE that way, than anything else!

And to cover the legal bases: This sale is in no way related to KDKA Radio or CBS Radio Inc. The use of the call letters on the certificate is with permission of CBS Radio, Inc. They have no involvement in the sale of these bricks.
